Brief description

MIRANDOLA is an industrial and agricultural centre 30 km north of Modena. Here a successful biomedicinal industry has been developed since 1964, the beginnings of which lay in the specialisation of one-way plastic products for dialysis, plasmapheresis and transfusion and infusion therapies. In the field of these innovative technologies, the activities were extended to include the design and manufacturer of machines.
The naming of the district 'Plastic Valley' was directed thererby at the Califorinain 'Silicon Valley'.
Multinational groups such as Diedeco, Bellco, Sorin, Gambro, Tyco Mallinckrodt, Fresenius or B.Braun made a signficant contribution to the build-up of this industrial sector in that these companies, attracted by the technological potential of the region, set up business here and took over already existing firms.
With the establishment of important industrial companies since the middle of the 1970s, an own production culture has been developed, which again led to the foundation of numerous small production and services companies in the biomedicine field. CONSOBIOMED was founded in 1990 in Mirandola and is a merger of many of the companies located there. Initially the main task area of CONSOBIOMED was restricted to assisting the SMEs in the branch with questions concering European standards and quality seals. In the interim, CONSOBIOMED coordinates and supports also the companies in trading with asscoiatied companies.

Initially, what applied was the taking into consideration in produktion of international quality standards and precise statutory provisions. Stimulation was given by the cooperation between various small companies in order jointly to provide services, among them consutling for qualtiy assurance systems and branch-related laws and standards, dealings and contacts with administrative authorities, controls in the production areas and advanced and further training.

After receiving its authorisation, the merged companies began to concentrate on marketing. In 1999 CONSOBIOMED was transformed into a consortium for foreign trade with its emphasis on the internationalisation of the district. The following activites were gvien precedence: participation in Trade Fairs, advertising, research, organisation and conduct of conferences, international business journeys and delegations. Today the consortium consists of firms with a high technological competence level and dynamic, flexible production capacities. These concern the whole production cycle of medicinal devices, from the production of the individual components through to the sterile commercial product.

Inclusion in EU project

  • BIDMED Contract: Project Officer (European Commission) number IST-2000-28618
  • European Projekt C517390 EPOS (eProcurement Optimised System for the Healthcare Marketplace) of the Ten Programme: the aim of the project is to evaluate the electronic services on-the-spot, which had been built up and extended as part of the Euroepan Project BIDMED. This enables hospitals and others in organisations active in the health care segment to perfom electronic invitations to tender. CONSOBIOMED represents with EPOS the position of the supplier with regard to the registration and participation in electronic invitations to tender, which are organised by the three hospitals represented in the project, the Papageorgiou Hospital di Salonicco (Greece), the Hospital de Vic (Catalogna, Spain) and the Antwerp Clinic (Belgium)
