Brief description
The Technology District for Biomedicine and Health Technologies is situated in the South of Sardinia (near Cagliari and Pula) and was founded by the Region within the framework programme “Ricerca e innovazione tecnologica“of the Research Ministry.
The Sardinian District received public-private financing of more than € 40 million. The District for Molecular Medicine in Friaul and the Districts for Biotechnologies in Lombardy and Apulia and this District are the only four Italian districts for applied biotechnologies in the health system recognised by the Italian government.
The district – and the research area of the Ogliastra region – is in addition recognised by the Ministry for Technological Innovation as an 'excellence' pool for applied bioinformatics technologies in personalised medicine as part of the 'ICT and Excellence Regions' programme (framework programme 'Società dell'informazione').

Data and Facts
The following points are included in the district policy:
- Strong scientific presence of the distrcit: Based on the island characteristics of Sardinia, the population living there and hence its genetic features can be classified as isolated. In additon, a high number of complex diseases have been noted, such as autoimmune diseases. These pre-requisties lead to the fact that numerous regional companies, which are active in the spheres of genetics, biotechnology and pharmacology, concentrate on medical research. The aim is the achievement of a high level of excellence.
- Priority investments in knowledge processes, which are distinguished by key positions: The resources and funds are, above all, used for the foundation of platforms and for the development of scientifc and technological competences with high applicable potential. The support of start-ups and spin-offs and the support during the production phase (medical biotechnology, pharmacology, bioinformatics and ICT for biomedicine) are hereby the focus of attention.
- Support for the integration of the regional health system in initiatives and measures of the district. This favours the development, assessment and testing of products and innovative processes in the fields of biomedicine and pharmacology.
Objectives
- Support for innovation in the biomedical segment to enhance the competitiveness of the regional health system. This is intended to be done, on the one hand, by inventions, development and trials of diagnosis procedures and therapies, on the other hand, by means of a better linking of resources and existing competences in the fields of economics, research and institutions.
- Stimulation and orientation of regional economic networks to biotechnology and attracting new companies, external investments and funding. The aim is the foundation of a Biomedicine & Technology Valley (Sardegna BioValley).

The “Porto Canale di Cagliari” is the most important container port in Sardinia and is situated 37 km from Polaris. The port is administered by the 'Cagliari International Container Terminal' company (CICT), which again belongs to the Contship Italia Group. It is not only a transhipment hub but also a central regional market junction. With the help of this port and the numerous cooperations with the most important compnies in Sardinia, both the export potential can be extended and also new partnerships formed.
