Brief description
The Sardinian ICT District Sardegna DistrICT is based on scientific, technological, economic and industrial competence, which has been developed since the beginning of the 1990's on the island, in particular, in Cagliari. The areas Information and Telecommunications Technologies and advanced Internet applications are the main focus.
At that time, the Centre for Research, Development and High Level Studies in Sardinia (CRS4) was founded by the regional government, which was headed by the Nobel Prize winner, Carlo Rubbia, and by Prof. Paolo Zanella. In cooperation with the research team from the Geneva Institute, CERN, the first Italian website (www.crs4.it) was created, so that the first online daily newspaper 'Unione Sarda' could be placed on the Internet.
The online version of Unione Sarda was the beginning for video online, the first commercial Internet service provider in Italy.
Then followed Tiscali, one of the most important Internet providers in Europe and numerous small high-tech companies.
With the new technological possibilities, the economic development of Sardinia was able to be pushed ahead with more rapidly. Thereby not only new employment possibilities were created but also the island attracted international attention.
With the foundation of the district, the competences were to be merged into an innovative and integrative system. This system and highly qualified staff and support funds were intended to support cooperation's and synergies between public and private research centres and companies in the branch.
