Main points

Sardegna Ricerche was commissioned by the regional government to promote the economic development of the island. Thereby both the existing technological innovations and also the knowledge should be utilised.
Thus the Polaris Science and Technology Park was founded in 2003 by Sardegna Ricerche with the assistance of the Autonomous Region of Sardinia and the European Union. Sardegna Ricerche took on in addition the administration of the park.
Polaris as an R&D facility offers the possibility of developing and industrialising technological research. This is guaranteed by the location of innovative companies, by R&D activities and with the assistance of a system of services, platforms and tools for innovation, research and technological development.
The main Polaris site is located in Pula, about 40 km from Cagliari Airport.
The park is surrounded by about 160 hectares of land and a nature reserve and lies at the foot of the Sulcis Massif.
The park directs its attention and its programmes towards two scientific-technological subject areas:
- ICT (information and communications technologies),
- Biotechnologies (biomedicine and applied biotechnologies)

The park offers a wide spectrum of specialist services for technological development. In Pula companies located there have the following services avaialble:
- Equipped and empty rooms (offices and laboratories)
- Logistics services (auditorium, canteen, training course rooms)
- Speicalist services for technological development
- Links and calculation possibilities
- Technology platforms

POLARIS, THE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY PARK ON SARDINIA: A SUPERORDINATE COMMUNITY
Over 400 people, among them, entreprenuers, reserachers and technologists, work tofgether in the park with a common aim. By linking the individual subject areas, the following can be promoted:
- Continuous exchange of knowledge and expereince
- Concentration on typical 'border topics' regarding competence and subject staff with superordinate activities.

SUBJECT-SPECIFIC SERVICES FOR TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT
- Information and documentation for patents and trademarks
- Technology transfer and support with company start-ups
- Further study courses and further training (Masters in Renewable Energies after degree course, nanobiotechnologies, medicinal biotechnologies, bioinformatics technologies)
- Specialist training and scientific-technical further training for companies
- Marketing and advertising for research activities

POLARIS COMPUTER CENTRE,ONE OFTHE MOST POWERFUL IN ITALY
Hihg-performance cluster with about 40 TFlops and 1 PetaByte memeory. It is administered by CRS4, the excellence research centre.

POLARIS PULA LINK
- Linked via glass fibre JANNA (regional broadband network) in Cagliari
- IP link with a guaranteed, symmetric minimum bandwidth of 100 Mbits, in down and upload, via the backbone to all national, international and NAP links used by all users.
- Internet nodes of the regional data transmision network (RTR)
- Node of the GARR network

Brief description

Polaris was founded in 2003 with the support of the Autonomous Region of Sardinia and the European Union. The structure and the administration were taken over by the public facility Sardegna Ricerche. The latter received the commission from the regional government to promote the econcomic development of Sardinia by means of technological innovation and knoweledge.
The park is intended to generate suitable infrastructures for the development and industrialisation of technological reserach. Innovative R&D companies can thus be established in a system, which provides for them widely differing services, platforms and instruments for innovation, research and technological development.
