Brief description

The VEGA Science and Technology Park was founded in 1993 with EU sponsorship funding amounting to 40 million Euros and today covers 35 hectares. VEGA is situated outside Venice in the heart of pulsating Northeast Italy.
The main aims of the park are the development of the site up to the highest standard and to make use of its innovation potential.
VEGA is therefore very anxious to assist with the designing of the urban upvaluation of Porto Marghera, one of the largest industrial areas in Europe. Up to now, over 10 hectares of the site have upvalued on which also unique examples of industrial architecture are to be found. The 120 innovative companies resident in the park, which employ about 1000 people, contribute decisively to the competitiveness of the site.

Activities

  • Aktivität 1 VEGA supports the transfer of innovation and technologies in the locally established companies in the following sectors: nanotechnology, ICT and digital media, the environment, cultural heritage, biotechnologies, aerospace, training and services in the advanced tertiary sector. For the realisation of prototypes, the park develops research projects, together with the regional companies. Thereby mergers of companies are supported more intensely. The support of innovation in the companies is fostered in particular by the Research and Innovation Centre via the Project Office and the Technology Transfer Office - TTO, that was founded in cooperation with the Venetian universities Ca’Foscari and IUAV. Some concrete examples of VEGA in the sphere of technology transfer
  • In the cultural heritage field, VEGA has imitated a project with the title “Restoration Protocols". The aim thereby was the acquiring of new knowledge and the realisation of innovative practices. Several concrete application examples from the field of building restoration were the basis for this. As the project result, the establishment of 'protocols' can be assessed, i.e. the protocol ling of innovative and accepted processes lead to a fundamental improvement: 1) of the restoration and maintenance quality, 2) of the experts used, 3) the uniformity and transferability of best practices between the specialists in the branch
  • In the environment sector, VEGA is currently organising a project, which concentrates on the technology transfer of the results of research and investigations, which were to date conducted in the refining of biomasses, raw materials and secondary raw materials. The aim thereby was the presentation of sustained production processes by means of the realisation of a pilot refinery in Porto Marghera. Among the aims of the project were: a) Implementation of an innovative eco-intelligent production system with the primary aim of the product and process sustainability; b) Use and assessment of material of biological origin, e.g. agricultural biomasses not in use in the food sector or biomasses of secondary raw materials; c) production of energy and oleochemical products with better characteristics; d) Application and upvaluation of the model of the “short distances" both in the geographical and also in the organisational sense, with the activation of an integration process between chemical industry, agriculture and regional logistics
  • VEGA is currently conducting a feasibility study for the foundation of Business Parks in South-East Europe, for which it will involve key personnel from the innovation sphere in South-East Europe. Hereby the development of support tools for innovative SMEs is the centre of attention, among others: a) Knowledge transfer, b) Enhancement of the service quality and the task management, c) Support for cluster formations and corporate networks. As a result of these activities, science and technology parks, incubators and research centres become regional innovation interfaces, which link SMEs and universities and support cluster developments
